Lesson 5: Restaurant Investigation

Yesterday Year 3 and Year 4 and their amazing teachers Miss Smith and Mrs Donnelly went to McDonald's in Stanthorpe on a bus so that we could learn how to run a restaurant as part of our Science unit "Eating Out." In a few weeks we have to make our own restaurant so we needed to learn things from the staff at McDonald's.

First we drove to Stanthorpe. It was a long journey. Max and Isaac fell asleep and Miss Smith took photos of them.

When we arrived at McDonald's the staff had already made our orders so we had lunch. It was scrumptious, delicious, amazingly well cooked, mouth watering, fabulous and perfect.

After that Trevor talked to us about his job. He owned 3 McDonald's  - he built the one in Stanthorpe and the one in Goondoowindi and Warwick but he recently sold the Goondoowindi restaurant. He told us about all of the different roles that staff have at McDonald's. He told us all about the facts to do with the food that McDonald's sell as well as facts about money and customers.

"Ben can make a cheeseburger in 12 seconds"
"We sell 2.5tonne of fries in a busy week"
"1.25 millions customers in his 2 stores"

Then we took a tour around McDonald's kitchen.
We saw:

  • the cold store rooms - you would only live 3 hours in the freezer
  • fryers
  • cleaning supplies
  • rubbish compactors
  • double sided grill
  • drive through
  • oil recycling
  • we fond out how cold the freezer -15.2
  • automatic drink maker
  • frappe machine
  • the syrup for the soft drinks
  • bun toaster

Lesson 4 - Restaurant Investigation - Part 1

Next week we are going on an excursion to McDonald's in Stanthorpe to learn how a restaurant works and because we are very lucky.
This week we needed to get in to groups and work out questions to ask the staff at McDonald's so that we will be able to make our own restaurant.
The groups were:

  • Chefs
  • Cleaners
  • Managers
  • Advertisers
  • Waiters
Each group had a supervisor who made sure the children in each group were doing their work.

We came up with some very interesting questions - no yes or no answer questions - they are all extended answer questions!

We can't wait for:
  • making our own restaurant
  • learning about how a good restaurant runs
  • hands on activities
  • going to McDonald's

Lesson 3 - The Advantages and Disadvantages of Eating Out

Today we were thinking about the advantages and disadvantages of eating out.

First we split up into groups and talked about the advantages of eating out.

Then we recorded them on a big post it.

Next we split up in to different groups and we talked about the disadvantages of eating out.

After that we recorded them on another big post it.

We found out there are more advantages than disadvantages of eating out. This means that people like going out more than staying at their house and eating.

I found out:

  • more people like eating out
  • there are lots of different opinions about eating out
  • people in our classes have different reasons for advantages and disadvantages
  • we have lots of smart people in our classes
  • some good reasons and advantages

I can't wait for:
  • McDonald's excursion
  • Hands on
  • Open our own restaurant
  • future lessons

Lesson 2 - Where do we eat out?

Where do we eat out?

First we made a list of places to eat out in Tenterfield.
Then we looked at information on www.skwirk.com about different types of restaurants. We found out there are 2 types of restaurants: formal and informal.

Next we classified the restaurants in our town under those headings. It looked like this:

After that we made summaries in our books.

Finally we updated our blog!

I want to know more about:

  • More types of local restaurants
  • Different machines in restaurants
  • How to run a restaurant

I am excited to:

  • Excursions
  • Run a restaurant
  • Be a waiter

Lesson 1 - Why do we eat out?

Why Do We Eat Out?

First we thought about why we eat out. We used the Think:Pair:Share tool to organise our ideas.

Then we looked at information on http://www.skwirk.com/ so we could make sure we had everything recorded.

Next we thought about the places that we like to eat. We had to decide on our favourite place and we shared them with the class.

After that we discussed ideas for a title page in our Science books.

Finally we updated our Blog!

I want to know more about......

  • how to cook some stuff
  • what things go in to food
  • things that make food
  • how chefs make different food
  • how to cook different cultural meals
  • how does the heat change food
  • how much sugar goes in to food

I am excited to........

  • do hands on lessons
  • talk about the lessons
